The future USB connector USB 3.1 will be ready for use by the middle of 2014. Next generation USB granted the name Type-C and specifications are confirmed. The size of plug is smaller (similar to micro USB) than the previous one but in terms of speed, it is step ahead of last one. The new USB 3.1 can transmit the data at the rate of 10 Gbps and will be featured with reversible option.
USB 3.0 Promoter Group Chairman, Mr Brad Saunders today made a statement
While USB technology is well established as the favored choice for connecting and powering devices, we recognize the need to develop a new connector to meet evolving design trends in terms of size and usability. The new Type-C connector will fit well with the market's direction and affords an opportunity to lay a foundation for future versions of USB.
The new connector will not match with current USB plugs due to smaller interface of USB 3.1, so a "passive new-to-existing cables" will released to avoid the lots of Micro USB cables to add in unwanted items, this is the only drawback of the USB. The major advantage of the new connector is its reversible option, it means forget about the up/down side, just plug in and go ahead. The promoter Group didn't demonstrate any picture of the forthcoming USB.
